Theme Trailer

The Somerville-Jesus Ball makes its hotly-anticipated return to Oxford on Friday 6th May 2016 after three years away.

Our theme this year is Surrealism: Enter the Subconscious, inspired by the 20th-century French artistic style.

Experience the playful absurdity of a world beyond reality, and descend into the darker realms of the subconscious mind.

“Surrealism is not a movement. It is a latent state of mind perceivable through the powers of dream and nightmare.”

– Salvador Dalí

Enter Somerville on the evening of 6th May, and step into a surreal work of art.

Expect the unexpected, for nothing will be as it usually seems. Strange objects and mysterious characters will adorn the grounds, filling you with bewilderment and awe as you make your way into the main quad.

Beyond the main attractions, bands, and DJs, you will also find yourself stumbling upon secret hideaways, where absurd sights and psychedelic visions will take you to a dream-like world, and mysterious music will take you deeper into the subconscious mind.

Anticipate a diverse mix of music, from the weird to the wonderful, and allow our entertainment for the night to transport you to a world beyond reality.

Food Drink

Just like the great surrealist artists of the 20th century, we invite you to revel in a night of entertainment and mystery. Surrealism is all about experimentation, and so we have worked to procure an eclectic mix of weird and wonderful foods from around the world, taking into account all different tastes and needs so that there’s something for everyone.

We hope to paint you your own reality with the sense-heightening food we have on offer. For drinks, experience the playful absurdity of a world beyond reality with our crazy and colourful concoctions, and descend into the darker realms of the subconscious mind with our menacing and mysterious mixtures.

From something as playful as bubbling prosecco, to something as enigmatic as a smoking cocktail, our surreal selection will allow you truly to transcend to a dream-like world.

“I do not understand why, when I ask for grilled lobster in a restaurant, I’m never served a cooked telephone.”

― Salvador Dalí
